K-State football recruiting outlook

Updated: 2013-02-05T22:32:56Z
Top five recruits

Name Pos. Rank* Ht. Wt. School
1. Tanner Wood DE 16* 6-5 247 Conway Springs (Kan.) HS
The Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year is ready to take his game to the next level at a new position. After playing everything from linebacker to quarterback to running back in high school, and excelling, his athleticism should allow him to make an impact right away on the Wildcats’ defensive line, which is losing four starters.
2. Nick Ramirez LB 11* 6-1 228 Lee’s Summit West
One of the top high school linebackers in Missouri should fit in well to K-State’s defense. Ramirez is a strong tackler, and is good against the run. He may be one of the most underrated four-star recruits out there.
3. Jake Waters QB 20** 6-2 215 Iowa Western CC
Waters led Iowa Western to a national championship and put up gaudy stats along the way. Many labeled him the nation’s top junior-college quarterback, and he was heavily recruited. He might be Collin Klein’s successor next season.
4. Jordan Willis DE 39* 6-5 260 Rockhurst
The three-star defensive end from Rockhust should be able to compete for playing time right away on K-State’s new-look defensive line.
5. Devon Nash DE 53** 6-5 260 Iowa Western CC
K-State is welcoming quality players from Iowa Western on both sides of the ball. Nash was one of the top pass-rushers in the junior-college ranks and will bring much-needed experience to Manhattan.

The one that got away

Martrell Spaight, a highly-touted junior-college linebacker, was briefly committed to the Wildcats. Then Arkansas came calling and he switched to the Razorbacks.

Still fishing for …

K-State returns the bulk of its receivers next season, but depth is always welcome. The Wildcats might have to look within for that. Only one wide out, 5-foot-7 LeAndrew Gordon, is expected to sign on Wednesday.

Position answered for …

Quarterback. The Wildcats needed someone to challenge Daniel Sams for the starting job next season. As the best junior-college quarterback available, Jake Waters fits that bill. Whoever wins the spot will have earned the right to follow Collin Klein.

Position unanswered for …

K-State will have to find two new defensive tackles next season. Will any of the defensive ends or linebackers who have committed be willing to move to the interior of the defensive line? Or will the Wildcats hope to pick up a tackle or two late?
