20th anniversary of Family Medical Leave Act

Updated: 2013-02-05T15:48:51Z

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act, the law that provides for unpaid leave to deal with personal or family care concerns.

The leave, which can be taken in relatively small time increments, has been used more than 100 million times by 35 million workers since 1993.

Because the leave applies only to full-time workers in companies with at least 50 employees many worker-advocacy groups have repeatedly urged expansion. Human resource organizations oppose expansion because of the difficulty of administering the law.
