Shares in H&R Block climbed more than 4 percent Monday, leading a small batch of regional stocks higher.

Block closed up 96 cents at $23.82.

Among other regional winners, Sprint gained 0.9 percent, while DST and Compass Minerals reported smaller gains.

On the loser list, UMB fell nearly 2 percent, Layne Christensen dropped 2.6 percent, Commerce lost 0.7 percent and Garmin fell 1.4 percent.

Overall, sthe stock market closed out its worst day so far this year, bringing the Dow average back below 14,000.

The drop, which erased 129 points from the Dow Jones industrial average, came on the first trading day after the index closed above 14,000 for the first time since the financial crisis.

The Dow ended at 13,880.08. Monday, down 0.93 percent.

Other indexes fell slightly more. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 17.46 points to end at 1,495.71 a loss of 1.2 percent.

Technology stocks fell more than other sectors, pulling the Nasdaq lower. The technology-heavy index fell 47.93 points, or 1.51 percent, to 3,131.17. The BATS 1000 fell 182.22 points, or 1.07 percent, to close at 16,910.02.

Falling stocks outnumbered rising ones nearly four to one on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was average, 3.4 billion shares.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial fell 3 cents, or 0.25%, to close at $11.82.

Cerner Corp. fell $1.03, or 1.22%, to close at $83.09.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. fell 25 cents, or 0.66%, to close at $37.60.

Compass Minerals rose 28 cents, or 0.39%, to close at $72.73.

DST Systems Inc. rose 12 cents, or 0.18%, to close at $66.83.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. fell 16 cents, or 0.82%, to close at $19.25.

Garmin Ltd. fell 52 cents, or 1.35%, to close at $37.98.

Great Plains Energy fell 9 cents, or 0.42%, to close at $21.44.

H&R Block Inc. rose 96 cents, or 4.20%, to close at $23.82.

Inergy L.P. fell 12 cents, or 0.59%, to close at $20.13.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. fell 68 cents, or 1.75%, to close at $38.18.

Kansas City Southern fell 45 cents, or 0.48%, to close at $93.89.

Layne Christensen Co. fell 60 cents, or 2.62%, to close at $22.34.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. fell 76 cents, or 0.81%, to close at $92.63.

Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 5 cents, or 0.88%, to close at $5.74.

UMB Financial Corp. fell 89 cents, or 1.99%, to close at $43.76.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. fell 0 cents, or 0.00%, to close at $40.17.

YRC Worldwide Inc. fell 9 cents, or 1.46%, to close at $6.09.
