Judge puts tax preparer out of business

Updated: 2013-02-02T04:39:43Z

A Kansas federal judge has permanently barred a tax preparer with offices in the Kansas City area from preparing returns for others, the U.S. Justice Department announced Friday.

A&S Tax Services LLC and its owner, Semere Tsehaye of St. Louis, agreed to the civil injunction and will pay $100,000 in civil penalties without admitting any allegations, according to a Justice Department statement.

The government had alleged that A&S routinely prepared tax forms that falsely claimed education and dependent-care credits and reported fictitious income and expenses to inflate the Earned Income Tax Credit.

A&S was a franchisee of Instant Tax Service, which was sanctioned by an Ohio federal court in November.
