KC mother charged with infant’s injuries

Jackson County prosecutors today accused a woman of breaking her 1-month-old baby’s legs in four places in November.

Prosecutors charged Lacresha Young, 21, of Kansas City, with assault, child abuse and child endangerment. She was in jail today in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

The baby’s injuries came to light on Nov. 6, after the father came home in the afternoon and began feeding him. The man noticed his son’s right leg was swollen and visibly larger than the left leg. He woke up Young, who was sleeping in a chair, and asked if she also noticed the swelling. She did, but denied knowing how it occurred, according to police reports.

The parents took their son to the hospital, where doctors determined the baby had suffered two fractures to his right ankle, one to his right knee area and one to his left ankle.

The Missouri Children’s Division took custody of the baby while police investigated. Officers arrested Young Thursday and she told police she caused the injuries, according to court records. The records did not reveal how she caused the injuries.
