Overland Park apartment blaze causes $100,000 damage

Updated: 2013-01-31T22:35:50Z

A small fire in a first-floor unit spread upward Thursday afternoon, causing $100,000 damage to an apartment building in Overland Park.

Crews responded about 2:30 p.m. to the Hawthorne on the Lake Apartments at 119th Street and Nall Avenue, saw smoke coming from the two-story building and quickly snuffed the fire, said Overland Park Fire Department spokesman Jason Rhodes. The blaze had burned through the second floor and into the attic.

No one was hurt. Fire damage was confined to two apartments, Rhodes said, but the entire second floor of the 16-unit building sustained smoke damage.

Rhodes said the blaze appeared to be electrical, but the exact cause is under investigation.
