Most regional stocks fell on Wednesday , and the overall stock market skidded too.

Among regional stocks, the loser list was led by Cerner, down 2.3 percent; UMB Financial, down 1.4 percent; Capitol Federal, down 1.3 percent, and Kansas City Southern, down 2.1 percent.

The few local winners included H&R Block and Waddell & Reed, both up about 1 percent.

Overall, stocks closed lower after a report that showed the U.S. economy unexpectedly contracted in the fourth quarter, putting the brakes on a January rally that has pushed stocks toward record levels.

The Federal Reserve also said growth “paused” in recent months and reaffirmed its commitment to boost the sluggish U.S. economy by keeping borrowing costs low for the foreseeable future.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 44.00 points, or 0.32 percent, to close at 13,910.42, its biggest decline in three weeks.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 fell 5.88 points, or 0.39 percent, to close at 1,501.96.

The Nasdaq composite fell 11.35 points, or 0.36 percent, to close at 3,142.31.

The BATS 1000 fell 84.37 points, or 0.49 percent, to close at 16,972.02.

Declining stocks outpaced advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was above average at about 3.7 billion shares.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial fell 16 cents, or 1.34%, to close at $11.75.

Cerner Corp. fell $1.91, or 2.26%, to close at $82.47.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 7 cents, or 0.19%, to close at $37.45.

Compass Minerals fell 4 cents, or 0.06%, to close at $71.81.

DST Systems Inc. fell 8 cents, or 0.12%, to close at $64.53.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. rose 5 cents, or 0.26%, to close at $19.40.

Garmin Ltd. fell 54 cents, or 1.40%, to close at $38.04.

Great Plains Energy fell 11 cents, or 0.52%, to close at $21.13.

H&R Block Inc. rose 15 cents, or 0.65%, to close at $23.07.

Inergy L.P. fell 8 cents, or 0.40%, to close at $20.17.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. rose 3 cents, or 0.08%, to close at $38.38.

Kansas City Southern fell $1.97, or 2.08%, to close at $92.85.

Layne Christensen Co. fell 25 cents, or 1.09%, to close at $22.66.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. fell 18 cents, or 0.20%, to close at $91.74.

Sprint Nextel Corp. rose 1 cents, or 0.18%, to close at $5.65.

UMB Financial Corp. fell 60 cents, or 1.35%, to close at $43.90.

Waddell & Reed Financial Corp. rose 35 cents, or 0.89%, to close at $39.49.

YRC Worldwide Inc. fell 29 cents, or 4.33%, to close at $6.41.
