President and CEO Travis Hicks said his De Soto-based Great American Bank bought the empty building for $371,000 at a foreclosure auction last week. Hicks declined to comment about the banks plans for the property.
The Midwest Hotel opened in the early 1900s and was one of three nearby hotels that catered to budget travelers arriving at Union Station. All three Midwest, Monroe and Rieger are part of the Working Class Hotels at the 19th and Main Historic District created in 2004 by the National Register of Historic Places.
In February 2008, the owners of the Midwest Hotel, the adjoining Hereford House restaurant and two other nearby properties tried to jointly market their properties for redevelopment. The Hereford House was destroyed in an arson fire in October of that year, however, and the plan never moved forward.
