Authorities have charged 25-year-old Dallas J. Bogard with first-degree assault in connection with the childs death.
The boy was injured Friday at a residence in the 1300 block of Northeast 46th Terrace. According to court records, Bogard told investigators that he called an ambulance after finding the boy lying beneath a fallen bookcase on his bedroom floor.
Bogard was baby-sitting the boy while the childs mother worked. Bogard told investigators that the boy had been in his room with the door shut. Bogard said he heard a thud, went to the boys room and found him under the bookcase, according to court records.
The boys mother told police she thought several bruises on her sons neck, back and legs were due to an iron deficiency, and she had planned to take him to the doctor about it, according to court records.
Investigators were told later that the boy had suffered a temporal skull fracture with swelling in the brain and upper spine.
Bogard was being held Tuesday in lieu of a $50,000 bond.
