MU-Vanderbilt basketball preview

Updated: 2013-01-26T00:05:03Z

Vanderbilt at No. 22 Missouri

•  WHEN/WHERE: 4 p.m. Saturday at Mizzou Arena in Columbia

•  TV/RADIO: ESPNU, KMBZ (980 AM and 98.1 FM)

•  ABOUT VANDERBILT (8-9, 2-3 SEC): The Commodores have struggled this season but have won their last two Southeastern Conference games, against Auburn and South Carolina. … Scoring has been an issue, as Vanderbilt only has two players, guards Kedren Johnson and Kyle Fuller, averaging in double figures. … The Commodores love to shoot three-pointers, as 43.3 percent of their attempts from the field are from behind the arc, which ranks 13th in Division I. … The Commodores hold opponents to 29.6 percent shooting from three-point range.

•  ABOUT MISSOURI (14-4, 3-2 SEC): The Tigers are coming off a thrilling 71-65 win over South Carolina in which they overcame a significant second-half deficit and avoided their first home loss of the season. Junior guard Earnest Ross led the Tigers with 21 points, senior forward Alex Oriakhi had 18 and sophomore guard Jabari Brown had 17. … Missouri coach Frank Haith said senior guard Keion Bell, who missed the South Carolina game because of a sprained ankle, has a better chance to play Saturday than senior forward Laurence Bowers, who has missed the last four games because of a sprained right knee ligament.

•  BOTTOM LINE: Vanderbilt beat South Carolina — the same team that gave Missouri so much trouble on Tuesday — on the road, so the Commodores figure to be a test. Considering Missouri loves to shoot threes, Vanderbilt’s perimeter defense is also a concern. But the Commodores rank next-to-last in the SEC in scoring at 59.8 points per game, and given Missouri’s overall success at home — the Tigers rarely lose at Mizzou Arena — it’s difficult to imagine the Commodores scoring enough to win.
