The Sunflower Showdown will match teams ranked among the nation’s top 11.

The Associated Press poll has Kansas third and Kansas State 11th. The teams meet Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum. The Jayhawks, 16-1, are No. 2 in the USA Today coaches’ poll, with the Wildcats, 15-2, No. 13.

Missouri is ranked 22nd in both polls.

Kansas and Kansas State enter the game tied for the Big 12 lead at 4-0.

Twice in 2010, the Jayhawks and Wildcats met as top 10 teams. This is the best combined ranking for both teams since that season.

Also Monday, Kansas State senior Rodney McGruder was named Big 12 player of the week, and Kansas freshman Ben McLemore was named the league’s rookie of the week.

McGruder averaged 20.5 points in two victories last week. It marked the fourth time this season he’s won the Big 12’s weekly player award. Only Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin in 2009 (six times) and Texas Tech’s Andre Emmett in 2004 (five) won the weekly award more times in a season.

McLemore won the rookie award for the second time after averaging 16.5 points in two games, and he also has been named player of the week on one occasion.

Kansas coach Bill Self was asked Monday during the Big 12 weekly teleconference how McLemore would match up with McGruder.

“I don’t know who is going to be matched up on who,” Self said. “Rodney is a far more mature player. The (motion) offense they’re running now has really benefitted him.

“Ben is an athlete that doesn’t come around every year.”
