Meet the KC Zoo’s new female polar bear

Updated: 2013-01-18T08:49:26Z

Berlin, a 23-year-old female polar bear, went on exhibit Thursday at the Kansas City Zoo. She will be on exhibit through Monday.

After that, she and Nikita, the zoo’s 6-year-old male, will take turns on display. The schedule will be posted at kansascityzoo.org. Eventually the two will be together.

Berlin came to Kansas City from zoos in Minnesota.

There are fewer than 70 polar bears, a threatened species, in captivity in North America. Kansas City is one of about a dozen zoos with a potential breeding pair.
