Fortune magazine’s new 2013 list of “100 Best Companies to Work For” ranks Burns & McDonnell 18th.

The employee-owned engineering firm was the only Kansas City-based company to make the list, although some Kansas City area workers are employed by other companies in the top 100.

Some examples of companies in the top 50 that have Kansas City area employees include Google, Edward Jones, Robert W. Baird, Deloitte and Men’s Wearhouse.

Nationally, Google ranked first.

Fortune’s ratings are made in cooperation with the Great Place to Work Institute, a research and consulting firm that conducts random employee surveys and corporate fact-finding.

It’s the third appearance on the list for Burns & McDonnell, which moved up from 26th last year.

The magazine said rankings were based on companies’ commitments to employee wellness, community outreach, professional and leadership development, and diversity.

Those commitments “are long-term investments that pay dividends in countless ways,” said Burns & McDonnell CEO Greg Graves.

The company, founded in 1898, has been employee-owned for 27 years. It has 3,668 employees nationally, with 2,200 “employee owners” in Kansas City. It said it expects to have 4,000 employees by midyear.
