K-State-West Virginia basketball preview
January 11
• WHEN/WHERE: 12:45 p.m. Saturday at WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W.Va.
• TV/RADIO: KMCI (Ch. 38); WHB (810 AM)• ABOUT KANSAS STATE (12-2, 1-0 Big 12): Rodney McGruder seemed to regain his confidence on offense by scoring 26 points in the second half against Oklahoma State last week. . … Nino Williams has also played strong lately, coming off the bench to provide important rebounds and offensive production. … This is the first time K-State has played at West Virginia since 1949. … It is the first of back-to-back new road trips for the Wildcats. They face Big 12 newcomer TCU on the road Wednesday.
• ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA (8-6, 1-1 Big 12): The Mountaineers got off to such a disappointing start that a reporter asked coach Bob Huggins earlier this week if he considered a 10-point loss to Oklahoma at home as a moral victory. Huggins brushed aside the question, saying he has never looked at losses that way. West Virginia then bounced back with a come-from-behind victory at Texas. … The Mountaineers are still struggling to score, though. It managed 57 points in each of its past two games. … Juwan Staten and Aaric Murray average more than 10 points, and Deniz Kilicli is solid inside. But West Virginia could use a few outside shooters.
• BOTTOM LINE: Winning at West Virginia is never easy, but K-State is the clear favorite. This is the type of game it has to win to challenge for a top-three finish in the Big 12.
