The Kansas City Star

Nathan Turner is a West Coast designer who’s known for throwing parties in his Los Angeles store. He’s a style expert for Pottery Barn and has a line of upholstered furniture for Elite Leather.

His recently released first book, “Nathan Turner’s American Style: Classic Design & Effortless Entertaining” (Abrams, $40), is about barefoot, fuss-free living with high style. The 224-page book is divided into three sections: coastal, city and country, with images of his own Malibu home, his mother’s house in Tahoe and the residences of actors Ione Skye, Amanda Peet and Adrian Grenier.

His rooms have a running theme of casual gallery walls, seagrass rugs, ottomans and global textiles.

The book includes party ideas — everything from an Argentine grill dinner to a Mexican taco fest to a kids pizza gathering — as well as tabletop design, centerpieces (he praises undervalued carnations) and recipes.

Turner’s passions for entertaining, decor and travel are apparent, and he makes it all look easy to achieve.

Who’ll like this book: California dreamers

Who won’t: Glamour seekers

Words of wisdom: “I’m more about taking formal living rooms and just saying to hell with it, let’s put a big TV in there with comfy furniture and have another hangout room. The key is you’ve got to use rooms.”

Style in a nutshell: Laid-back living
