Kansas offensive lineman Luke Luhrsen, a redshirt freshman, is leaving the Jayhawks’ program, KU coach Charlie Weis announced Wednesday.

Luhrsen, a native of Wheaton, Ill., redshirted during the 2011 season before playing in three games as a reserve last season. Luhrsen says he will stay at Kansas to pursue a degree in marketing.

“After sitting down with Luke he informed me he has decided to discontinue playing football to concentrate solely on academics,” Weis said in a statement. “Luke was a valuable asset to our team, and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”

•  COMBINE INVITES: Senior safety Bradley McDougald has received an invitation to take part in the NFL Scouting Combine on Feb. 20-26 in Indianapolis. The official list of players will not be announced until February, but senior offensive lineman Tanner Hawkinson is reportedly scheduled to attend as well.
