My 6-year-old son, Alex, and I often play tic-tac-toe the old-fashioned way, drawing it out on scrap pieces of paper. But then I came across an adorable handmade wooden set at MASH Handmade and couldn’t resist.

The artist is Joelle Felyce Geisler, who was introduced to laser-cutting at MAKEatx, a studio in Austin, Texas. You choose your hand-painted board and then pick your playing pieces, which come in a hand-stamped bag of 12. Different themes are available.

• Traditional Xs vs. Os

• Stars vs. moons

• Monsters vs. monsters (the one I chose, shown in this photo).

Each set is $26 at MASH (named for the game Mansion, Apartment, Shack, House), 3900 Pennsylvania, 816-980-7000, mashhandmade.com.

The wells of the board are deep enough to easily tote it on car rides. And the set is nice enough to have out on display.
