Christmas present

You’d not suspect some helpful elf;

The wrapping I had done myself.

It’s obvious — just check the way

The shiny bow shows signs of fray.

Instead of creases, smooth and pressed,

The wrapping job is quite distressed:

The paper hardly prim or taut;

It clearly wasn’t wrapped where bought.

And as for ribbon — mercy sake!

It dangles, held by gobs of tape.

A debacle, this wrapping — still,

It’s what’s inside that gives the thrill.
