JOB DESCRIPTION: Owner and principal planner and designer of Mindy Weiss Party Consultants. She has created baby showers for Ashlee Simpson, Nicole Richie, Jennifer Lopez, Denise Richards and Brooke Shields. Weddings have included Fergie and Josh Duhamel, and Ellen DeGeneres and Portia Rossi. Weiss’ website includes a blog and a party supplies store, MindyWeiss.com.

Weiss recently was in the Kansas City area and planned a party for Tammy Rome, a local woman who won a contest.

Q. What did you do for the holiday party for Tammy Rome?

A. We planned a winter wonderland-themed Christmas celebration for Tammy and her guests at the Deer Creek Golf Club in Overland Park. Tammy is a winner of the “Rewrite Your Day,” a national awareness campaign for people who live with Chronic Migraine — a neurological disorder where patients experience 15 or more headache days a month, lasting four hours or longer. A national contest was held last year, and 15 winners were selected across the country by a panel of health advocates, and Tammy was a winner.

Tammy missed celebrating Christmas five years ago due to a debilitating migraine, so we wanted to re-create her family’s Christmas traditions. We worked with the venue to create a traditional Christmas menu, including turkey and mashed potatoes.

We also worked with a local florist, An Eclectic Stem, to create beautiful and elegant white floral arrangements to go along with the winter wonderland theme. I also used white linens, some with fur on the edge to add a little extra décor to the dinner table. There were silver accents in the place settings as well.

Tammy loves to bake around the holidays, so we set up a cookie swap table and provided festive boxes so that Tammy and her guests could exchange cookies and take an assortment home with them.

Q. How do you like to celebrate the holidays?

A. I love to be home with my family and watching them open unexpected gifts.

Q. What’s your home like?

A. My home is a 1936 Mediterranean filled with vintage treasures in Los Angeles.

Q. What items do you like to have on hand for entertaining?

A. I always like to have great food served in creative containers such as vintage holiday ware, and a lovely bar with a holiday drink.

Q. Do you have any suggestions for New Year’s Eve party decorations?

A. I love to have balloons just hanging everywhere. It’s festive, whimsical and not too expensive.

Q. What helps make entertaining easier?

A. Being organized.

Q. How do you like to set the table for guests?

A. I love a beautiful table with lots of flowers and decor to make it feel intimate. Place cards are also important so each person knows where to sit. But not everything has to match — opening your cabinets and pulling serving pieces that have been in the family forever really can warm up the table and buffet for food.
