After a two-year assessment of his college future, Blue Valley Northwest point guard Clayton Custer asked those around him to take a break from all the recruiting talk.

He broke his own promise. While clearing his mind of the recruiting process, Custer came to a conclusion that he would be headed north.

Custer announced his commitment to Iowa State live on Metro Sports on Monday night. He said he also considered offers from Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Stanford.

"I wasn’t trying to figure out where I wanted to go — it just hit me," said Custer, a junior at BV Northwest. "I knew it was the right place for me, and there’s no place I wanted to go other than Iowa State."

Custer attended Iowa State’s game against Campbell on Sunday night and informed coach Fred Hoiberg of his decision following the game.

Before he joins the Cyclones, though, he still has two full years left with his high school teammates, who joined him for the TV announcement Monday. Custer led BV Northwest to a third consecutive Kansas 6A runner-up finish last season, averaging 19.1 points per game for Ed Fritz’s squad to go with team-highs in assists (4.2) and steals (2.1).

He shot better than 52 percent from the field and boasted a five-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio.

"I’m so glad that now I can focus on the high school team and hopefully win a state championship with my teammates," Custer said. "I’m happy I could make this decision with my family and my teammates. That’s the most important thing."

During Custer’s two seasons, BV Northwest is 46-4 overall. Two of those losses came against Kansas freshman Perry Ellis and four-time reigning champion Wichita Heights in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 state titles games.
