Off-duty officer exchanges shots with gunman in KC, North

Police on Saturday night were investigating shots fired outside a home in the 6100 block of North Mercier Street in Kansas City, North.

Officers were dispatched to the scene after a call came in around 5:25 p.m. regarding a disturbance outside the residence involving a man armed with a gun.

An off-duty police officer who lived in the residence came outside in response to the dispute and exchanged shots with the gunman.

The gunman then fled the scene in a vehicle in an unknown direction.

Kansas City police spokeswoman Stacey Graves said officers spoke to neighbors and canvassed the area and didn’t believe there was any remaining danger. She said the off-duty officer involved in the shooting didn’t recognize the gunman.

No suspect was in custody, and no further suspect information was available.
