Mission police said Robert J. Pruitt, 58, shot Todd A. Pruitt, 51, of Shawnee, in front of witnesses about 7:15 a.m.
The shooter sped away in a stolen rental car from the parking lot in the 5700 block of Broadmoor Street, just north of Johnson Drive. About 11 a.m., police received a tip that Robert Pruitt was near 104th Street and Blue River Road in Kansas City. Tactical officers began searching parkland and woods in the area.
When they spotted Pruitt near a creek just before noon, he turned a gun on himself and fired.
Todd Pruitt, a University of Kansas Hospital employee, was killed outside his office building. The hospital takes up about two-thirds of the building, which contains space for information technology, medical records and the call center.
He was a senior applications analyst with the hospital’s information technology services, making sure all the systems worked together and any new add-ons didn’t harm the rest of the computer system. He joined the hospital in June.
“He had a lot of people who thought highly of him as a person and as an employee and were very shaken up about the shooting,” said Dennis McCulloch, a spokesman for University of Kansas Hospital. “Many of those employees went home early because of the emotional impact of the shooting.”
The hospital will meet with Mission and University of Kansas police as well as the building’s owners to review security at the site.
Witnesses told police that the men had an altercation in the parking lot before Robert Pruitt shot his brother several times, including at least once in the head. The younger Pruitt was taken to a hospital, where he died.
“Our condolences go out to this employee and his family,” University of Kansas Hospital said in a statement. “We are deeply saddened.”
