The Royals signed two minor-league free agents Friday who spent last season in the Atlanta system and confirmed a minor-league deal with catcher Manny Piña, who was assigned outright last week to Class AAA Omaha after clearing waivers.

The newcomers are speedy outfielder Luis Durango and power-hitting first baseman/designated hitter Ian Gac.

Durango, 26, batted .289 with a .352 on-base percentage last season while playing center field at Class AAA Gwinnett. He also led the International League with 46 steals in 62 attempts.

His nine-year professional career includes 39 big-league games from 2009-11 for San Diego and Houston. He batted .292 with a .361 OBP.

Gac, 27, is one year removed from being the Carolina League’s most valuable player after batting .279 with 33 homers and 96 RBIs in 140 games in 2011 at Class A Winston-Salem.

A 10-year minor-league veteran, Gac played just 75 games this season at Class AA Mississippi while batting .247 with seven homers and 35 RBIs.

Piña, 25, missed the first three months of last season because of torn knee cartilage, which limited him to 50 games – one at Rookie Surprise, 48 at Class AA Northwest Arkansas and one in the big leagues. He batted .278 in the minors.

The Royals previously announced five minor-league signings: first baseman Matt Fields, pitcher Juan Gutierrez, pitcher Devon Lowery, catcher/first baseman Max Ramirez and outfielder Nick Van Stratten.
