What’s at stake

Kansas is a heavy underdog for the fifth straight week. The Jayhawks aren’t expected to win. And a road victory over Texas Tech would be a sizeable upset. Still, if KU suffers another blowout, it will be another reminder of the gap between Kansas and the rest of the Big 12.

Cheers if …

Kansas running back James Sims can rush for more than 100 yards for the sixth straight week. Sims, a junior, is the Big 12’s leading rusher in conference games (131.4 yards per game). But Texas Tech has the third-best rushing defense in the league.

Jeers if …

The KU defense doesn’t improve on the road. Déjà vu, perhaps. But KU surrendered 666 yards at Baylor last week. And the Jayhawks have allowed more than 46 points in three Big 12 road games.

Three things about Texas Tech

1 Senior quarterback Seth Doege is second in the Big 12 in passing yards (2,869) and first in touchdowns with 31. If Doege passes for 131 yards against KU, Texas Tech will have a quarterback pass for at least 3,000 yards in 13 straight seasons.

2 Texas Tech just finished a five-week stretch in which it faced five top 25 teams. The Red Raiders went 2-3, including a 31-22 home loss to Texas last week.

3 The Red Raiders’ defense ranks 18th nationally in total defense (314.1 yards per game) and second in the Big 12 in pass defense (188.2).

Key matchup

Texas Tech’s Seth Doege vs. KU defense: If Kansas wants a chance for an upset, it’ll have to slow Doege, Texas Tech’s offensive leader. In his last eight games, Doege has surpassed 300 yards passing seven times. The only exception: A three-interception performance against Oklahoma.

Rustin Dodd’s pick: Texas Tech 34-14

The Jayhawks may be able to slow Texas Tech’s offense at times. Maybe. But until KU can prove it can score more than a couple touchdowns against a Big 12 foe, a victory just doesn’t appear realistic.
