The brand, part of the Williams-Sonoma family, is expanding into items usually sold at hardware stores, cosmetic counters, garden centers and kitchen shops. An emphasis is placed on handmade items made in the U.S., especially those close to the West Elm flagship store in Brooklyn. West Elm executives say they were inspired by the classic general store to carry hundreds of household tools. A sampling:
• Brooklyn Copper Cookware made by one coppersmith, one tinsmith and one ironsmith
• Natural-straw brooms
• Garden hoses
• Toothpaste and mouthwash
West Elm Market will have a standalone location in Brooklyn as well as shops within existing West Elm stores. Items will be available through its print catalog and online at WestElm.com.
