The Star’s recommendations | Re-elect Koster, Zweifel in Missouri

Updated: 2012-10-22T23:52:44Z

Two capable officeholders deserve re-election in Missouri. Attorney General Chris Koster and Treasurer Clint Zweifel have accomplished a great deal in their first terms.

Koster, a Democrat, has aggressively cracked down on Medicaid fraud, unfair debt collection practices, clean water violations and unscrupulous dog breeders.

Koster has been vigilant in warning legislators about looming problems, such as Missouri’s nearly bankrupt second-injury fund. He was the first statewide official to endorse an increase in Missouri’s low cigarette tax.

Koster’s Republican opponent is the overzealous Ed Martin. As chief of staff to former Gov. Matt Blunt, Martin was unable to separate politics from good government and ended up having to resign. Missouri can’t risk a repeat in the attorney general’s office.

Koster has earned a chance to tackle urban violence and improvements in Missouri’s death penalty apparatus in his second term.

Zweifel, a Democrat, has been an able steward of Missouri’s fiscal assets.

By reaching out to small banks and credit unions, he tripled the number of lenders in the linked deposit program, which makes low-interest loans available to farmers and small businesses. He earned high grades for the performance of MOST, Missouri’s 529 College Savings Plan.

Zweifel demanded a stronger ethics policy on the Missouri Housing Development Commission and got the panel to focus on housing for the mentally ill and other groups at risk of being homeless.

Zweifel’s opponent is Republican Cole McNary, a state representative from Chesterfield. McNary has difficulty being specific about what he would do in office.

Zweifel has used his opportunity wisely. We look forward to seeing what he can do in a second term.
