KCK standoff following fatal shooting ends without arrest

A lengthy police standoff in Kansas City, Kan., that started after a fatal shooting ended Sunday without an arrest.

Now police are looking for two men who they believe have information in the early morning shooting, the city’s second homicide over the weekend.

The standoff began after Kansas City, Kan., police officers responded to the area near 22nd Street and Garfield Avenue around 4 a.m. Sunday on reports of a shooting. They found a man with a gunshot wound lying outside between two homes. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Witnesses told police that a suspect ran into a nearby home shortly after the shooting.

“We are standing by, trying to convince him to come out,” Sgt. Emmett Lockridge, a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department, said before 10 a.m. Sunday. “So far we haven’t had any response. … We’re not sure he’s inside.”

After several hours, officers determined the house was empty.

Witnesses told police that the Sunday morning altercation began when an argument broke out between residents in the area.

“It was some type of neighborhood dispute that turned into a fight that turned into a shooting,” Lockridge said.
