An insurance carrier for the Blue Springs School District paid $500,000 to settle a lawsuit that alleged a 12-year-old student committed suicide after being targeted by bullies.

The district told KCTV-5, The Star’s reporting partner, on Friday that the insurance company controlled the settlement.

Lawyers declined to disclose the agreement’s financial terms when they announced the settlement on Oct. 3.

Brandon Myers hanged himself in his home Feb. 22, 2007. In the suit, his parents, Kimberly and Randy Myers, alleged that he had been the victim of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of fellow Blue Springs district students and that the district had been negligent in its training and supervision of employees.
