Q. How did you two hook up to design together?
A. Georgie: We met at design school at KU. We studied abroad in England together. We worked in the same department at Hallmark close to 10 years. When we designed gift wrap, we fell in love with the world of pattern. Weve dreamed of doing a business on the side.
Kiefer: We initially started designing invitations to parties and weddings.
Georgie: Then babies came along for our friends and us. We started our business full time. We started designing prints for nurseries and kids rooms on Etsy. We both have boys. My son Shaw turned 2 this month.
Kiefer: Emmett is 1 1/2 years old.
Q. Whats the latest for you work wise?
A. Georgie: We have new things for fall coming to our Etsy shop. And we have a few contracts in the works including our first fabric collection. Its with Windham Fabrics. The fabrics will be in stores in spring 2013 for people to sew kid clothes, aprons, coasters, tea towels. Theyre in our signature bright colors.
Kiefer: We also designed journals and note cards for teNeues. Theyll be available at museum stores and Barnes & Noble. We love office supplies and paper products.
Q. Who and what inspires your work?
A. Kiefer: Matisse, midcentury childrens illustrators and graphic designers such as Paul Rand.
Georgie: The Marimekko brand of fabrics and Charles and Ray Eames.
Q. What are your favorite stores?
A. Georgie: For the home, Bon Bon Atelier, Prydes, Anthropologie.
Kiefer: For clothes, Kate Spade, Standard Style and Madewell.
Q. Tell us about your homes.
A. Kiefer: We live in a 1943 Cape Cod close to the Prairie Village shops. I love that we can walk to the grocery store, to get coffee or buy something from the hardware store. I keep telling my husband we can never move.
Georgie: We live in a 1950s ranch in Fairway. We live 5 minutes apart, which is handy for work.
Q. Whats your favorite room in your house?
A. Georgie: My sons room is the most fun. We spend so much time laughing in there and reading stories and having dance parties. Its modern, playful and colorful. The walls are a melon green. Theres a lot of white and natural wood furniture. Friends are always saying that the house feels beachy because of the light furniture finishes.
Kiefer: I love my sons nursery but my favorite is the screened porch. We rebuilt the whole thing. We play, eat, drink wine and listen to music there. Its decorated with bulb lights.
Q. Do you collect anything?
A. Kiefer: Fabric from garage sales and flea markets. I dont do it on purpose I just like them. I also love dishware, specifically white milk glass with red detailing.
Georgie: Chairs. Ive slowed down on that because the house is only so big. Weve started collecting local art and items from Etsy.
