A Kansas City man supported a “nascent” plot to bomb the New York Stock Exchange, an FBI official said Tuesday at a Washington D.C. hearing. Deputy FBI Director Sean Joyce said federal investigators used secret surveillance warrants to identify Khalid Ouazzani, who is awaiting sentencing in Missouri on terrorism-related charges, as part of the scheme.

Some KU basketball games will air on Metro Sports under new deal with Time Warner

KU athletics and IMG College, which holds multimedia rights for KU sports, announced Tuesday a long-term television partnership with Time Warner Cable Sports to distribute 300 hours of original KU sports programming annually, including live games, other coverage and replays. That means KU men’s basketball games carried by “Jayhawk Television” and aired on KSMO-TV Channel 62 in Kansas City last season will move to Metro Sports. Last season, “Jayhawk Television” aired six KU basketball games, including two exhibitions.

Dish declares Sprint lawsuit a diversion

Dish Network Corp. fired back Tuesday in the legal battle that Sprint Nextel Corp. launched over their competing bids for Clearwire Corp. In a statement, the satellite television company called the lawsuit an attempt to divert attention away from Sprint’s unfair treatment of other Clearwire investors. Sprint had sued Monday to stop Dish’s effort to buy Clearwire shares directly form investors.

The average American family of four wastes between $1,350 and $2,275 a year in food. Much of that ends up in the kitchen trash can: uneaten leftovers, milk past the expiration date and vegetables that go bad. In the U.S., all that waste adds up to 90 billion pounds of food a year, and the planet is paying a staggeringly high price for it.

A Kansas City firefighter was treated Thursday for severe burns he suffered while battling a house fire in the 9900 block of North Hedges Avenue.

The fire was reported just before midnight Wednesday. Heavy smoke and flames were pouring from the residence when fire crews arrived. The cause is under investigation, Battalion Chief James Garrett said.
