— Terry Mohajir, an associate athletic director in the KU athletic department, has been hired as the next athletic director at Arkansas State, his alma mater, the school announced Wednesday.

Mohajir has worked at Kansas since May 31, 2011, when he was hired by then first-year KU athletic director Sheahon Zenger to oversee the Williams Educational Fund, the department’s chief fund-raising arm. “I couldn’t be happier for Terry and excited for him,” Zenger said. Mohajir’s hiring signaled a reboot for the Williams Fund, which had become entangled in the school’s ticket scandal in 2010. And Mohajir’s job included repairing frayed relationships among the department's donor base. “I think we’ve really taken a hands-on approach; and we’ve gotten out among the people,” Zenger said. “From Garden City to Kansas City.” Zenger said Wednesday that KU would likely re-assign responsibilities within the department to fill Mohajir’s role. For now, Zenger said, KU will not fill the position with an outside hire. “At this point, I believe we have the talent in-house,” Zenger said. “And that’s the direction we’ll go right now.” Mohajir, who had previously worked as associate athletic director at Florida Atlantic since 2004, also directed KU’s marketing and game-day staffs. Mohajir, a graduate of Shawnee Mission South, played football at Arkansas State in the early 1990s before serving as an assistant football coach at KU under Glen Mason. Mohajir also worked as an assistant athletics director at UMKC from 1997 to 2004.
