Peterson returns

Coming in as a substitute in the 74th minute, Jacob Peterson returned to MLS action for the first time since suffering a separated shoulder July 28 in a 2-1 home loss to the Columbus Crew.

He came on for midfielder Roger Espinoza with Sporting Kansas City down a goal and desperate for a late equalizer.

“It felt good, but it would have felt a little bit better if we would have gotten the three points instead of one,” Peterson said. “But personally, it’s nice to be back. It’s been a long road back, and I’m happy to be on the field again.”

Peterson, who has three goals and an assist in 18 appearances, including seven starts, reported no lingering issues with the shoulder, though it was heavily iced after the game.

“I’m kind of glad this game was the first one,” he said. “They’ve got a couple big boys who like to mix it up. It was refreshing. I got into a couple aerial duels and the shoulder felt good.”

• Assistant coach Tim Hanley assumed coaching duties Friday night for the Dynamo with head coach Dominic Kinnear serving a one-game suspension.

Kinnear was ejected for dissent in a Sept. 6 win against Real Salt Lake at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Houston was also without forward Calen Carr, who scored both goals July 18 in a 2-1 win against Sporting KC during the last meeting between the two teams.

Meanwhile, Giles Barnes subbed on in the 81st minute, making his MLS debut.

• It was seven years ago Monday (Sept. 17, 2005) that Preki became the oldest player in MLS history with an assist at 42 years and 85 days. Preki, who owns the most goals in club history (71), also recorded his 98th and final assist with the then-Wizards.
