Grandview man is charged after 2-year-old daughter is seriously injured

A Grandview man was charged Friday with causing serious physical injury to his 2-year-old daughter.

Joshua A. Coleman, 21, was arrested Thursday after emergency crews responded to the 6100 block of East 126th Street on a call of a child not breathing. The toddler was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Doctors told detectives the injuries were inconsistent with Coleman’s story that his daughter had fallen off a couch while eating a granola bar. She had, in fact, suffered head trauma, bleeding in the brain, contusions on her lungs, an injured spleen and multiple bruises all over her body, according to documents.

Coleman then told detectives he disciplined the girl by hitting her with a belt, backhanding her in the chest and using both hands to slap both sides of her head simultaneously, sometimes hard enough to make her disoriented.

Coleman also said he forced her to face a wall and do “squats” until she fell from tiring.

Coleman, the documents say, said she sustained the injuries “due to her being disobedient and not doing what she is supposed to do.”

Prosecutors requested bond of $250,000.
