The schedule picks up Saturday in the Big 12, which went 9-0 on the first weekend.

Some of biggest tests come on the road with Iowa State visiting Iowa, Oklahoma State at Arizona and Texas Tech taking on a suddenly dangerous Texas State squad that smacked Houston last week.

The SEC will go to school on league newcomers Missouri and Texas A&M. Those teams make their conference debuts at home against Georgia and Florida, and for the Aggies, it’s a season opener after last week’s game at Louisiana Tech was postponed.

SEC games to watch

•  Auburn at Mississippi State, 11 a.m. (ESPN): Early statement game in the brutal West Division with Auburn looking to bounce back after the Clemson loss and the Bulldogs in something of a must-win at home.

•  East Carolina at South Carolina, 11:20 a.m. (KSMO, Ch. 62): The status of Gamecocks quarterback Connor Shaw (shoulder) was uncertain at midweek. He could use some healing time before playing Mizzou in two weeks.

•  Florida at Texas A&M, 2:30 p.m. (ESPN): The prolific Houston offense goes to the SEC. Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin oversaw one of the nation’s most potent attacks, but he had Case Keenum at quarterback. Now, it’s Johnny Manziel, a redshirt freshman in his college debut.

•  Western Kentucky at Alabama, 2:40 p.m. (KSMO, Ch. 62): Tide coach Nick Saban chastised reporters for disrespecting the Hilltoppers, a 40-point underdog. But even Western coach Willie Taggart likened the Tide to an NFL expansion team earlier this week.

•  Georgia State at Tennessee, 3 p.m. (Pay-per-view): Good vibes around Knoxville after the Vols’ convincing victory over North Carolina State. A familiar figure patrols the Georgia State sideline, former Georgia Tech/Alabama/Kentucky coach Bill Curry.

•  Louisiana-Monroe at Arkansas, 6 p.m. (ESPNU): The Warhawks have a case for the most difficult start to the season. After this game at Little Rock, they visit Auburn before meeting Baylor at home.

•  Washington at LSU, 6 p.m. (ESPN): Remember Washington quarterback Keith Price in last year’s Alamo Bowl? He put up bigger numbers than Baylor’s Robert Griffin III, 438 passing yards and accounting for seven touchdowns. Now, he faces a big-boy defense.

•  UTEP at Mississippi, 6 p.m. (Fox Sports KC): The Miners gave Oklahoma all it wanted last weekend, with running back Nathan Jeffrey rushing for 177 yards and returning a blocked punt for a touchdown.

•  Georgia at Missouri, 6:45 p.m. (ESPN2): Don’t forget that leaving the stadium at halftime and returning later, common in the Big 12, isn’t allowed in the SEC.

•  Kent State at Kentucky, 6:30 p.m.: The SEC lost two non-league games on the first weekend, and Kentucky’s loss to Louisville was the uglier one. Kent is coming off a 41-21 victory over Towson and could send the Wildcats reeling.

•  Vanderbilt at Northwestern, 7 p.m. (Big Ten Network): The Wildcats were fortunate winners at Syracuse while Vandy was a hard-luck loser at home to South Carolina in the opening week. Both teams believe they are bowl-worthy.

Big 12 games to watch

•  Miami, Fla., at Kansas State, 11 a.m. (FX): The Hurricanes surrendered more than 500 yards in beating Boston College last weekend. The Wildcats didn’t get a sack against Missouri State but didn’t blitz.

•  Iowa State at Iowa, 2:30 p.m. (Big Ten Network): The Cyclones won an overtime thriller at Ames last season, and they’re coming off the more impressive first-week performance, beating Tulsa while the Hawkeyes squeezed by Northern Illinois.

•  Rice at Kansas, 2:30 p.m. (Fox Sports KC): The first meeting between the programs since the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl. Both teams aim to look sharper than last week.

•  Florida A&M at Oklahoma, 6 p.m. (Pay-per-view): Quality of opponent means the Sooners will look better this week than last (24-7 victory at UTEP), but will they work out all the bugs before Kansas State visits in two weeks?

•  Grambling State at TCU, 6 p.m.: First game at new Amon Carter Stadium and first game as a Big 12 program for the Horned Frogs.

•  Texas Tech at Texas State, 6 p.m.: Tech is on upset alert after coach Dennis Franchione’s Bobcats beat Houston last week.

•  New Mexico at Texas, 7 p.m. (Longhorn Network): The Lobos are a better program under Bob Davie, but they shouldn’t be able to hang with the Longhorns as David Ash grows more comfortable at quarterback.

•  Oklahoma State at Arizona, 9:30 p.m. (Pac-12 Network): This should be one of the nation’s most high scoring games of the weekend. The Cowboys scored 84 against Savannah State, and the Wildcats rolled up 624 total yards in an overtime victory over Toledo.
