City sees bump in sales tax revenue for July

City Manager **Troy Schulte** said today that sales tax revenues to Kansas City were up $1 million in July 2012, compared to 2011, and at least some of that increase is almost surely attributable to Kansas City hosting the All-Star Game events, July 6-10.

Of course, the city spent about $1 million preparing for the All-Star festivities, so that's a wash for the city.

But the city has also seen a $700,000 uptick in hotel/motel tax collections for this July, versus 2011, and that's new money to the city. Again, it's not clear how much of that was due to the All-Star events but probably a good portion of it was.

The total revenue picture won't be clear for several more months, because many businesses only report tax collections quarterly. Schulte said every $1 million in new revenue to the city translates into about $50 million in overall economic impact to the city.

The Convention and Visitors Association is scheduled to report to the city council on the economic impact from the All Star events later this month.
