LAWRENCE — Charlie Weis had all day Sunday to digest the game film from KU’s 31-17 season-opening victory over South Dakota State on Saturday night. The film revealed what he termed the “good, the bad and the ugly” from his team’s opener. And it also reaffirmed something he saw as the game was taking place.

Quarterback Dayne Crist and his receivers were just a little bit out of sync.

“You can definitely see it,” Weis said Sunday.

So count the passing game as one kink that Weis and KU will attempt to iron out before they return to the field next Saturday against Rice. Crist finished just 17-of-36 passing for 169 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Senior Kale Pick was KU’s leading receiver with five catches for 81 yards, including a 43-yard reception on the first play from scrimmage, while senior Daymond Patterson added four catches for 44 yards.

On Saturday night, Weis said that Crist was anxious — but added that the receivers probably needed to shoulder a bit of the blame. In one case, he said, a player ran the wrong route because he believed the Jayhawks were in a play that sounded similar to the one that was called. On Sunday, Weis saw other clues that suggested that the timing was just a bit off in certain situations.

“When you watch a guy run an 'in' cut, and the quarterback (is) waiting for (the receiver) to come out of the break, instead of just letting it go,” Weis said. “… you can see that there’s got to come a point where you just trust that the guy is gonna be at the right depth and at the right spot.”

Other notes:

-- After sorting through the film, Weis saw more positives from juco transfer running back Taylor Cox, who had 121 yards rushing on 16 carries in his KU debut.

“There was one play in particular that came to mind,” Weis said. “It was an inside run; it was in plus-territory, he cut to the left, he made a couple guys miss… and then he had a safety that he couldn’t make miss, and so he just lowered his shoulder and basically put the guy right on his back.

“When a guy has enough wiggle and shake-and-bake to make people miss, but is physical enough to run people over, like we saw last night, that’s a good sign.”

-- Weis also reported zero injuries after the Jayhawks’ season opener.

“Knock on wood,” Weis said. “This was as clean a day as I can remember for a Sunday.”
