Jackson County prosecutors on Friday accused a 32-year-old man of shooting at a Kansas City police officer Thursday.

The officer’s partner fired back, but no one was hit.

Prosecutors charged Ralondo D. Wheeler of Kansas City with assault and armed criminal action in connection with an incident that started about 1 p.m. near 10th Street and Woodland Avenue.

The officers were working off duty at a housing project when one of them saw Wheeler, who allegedly was trespassing, according to court records. The officers approached Wheeler, who took off running. Wheeler allegedly fired repeatedly at one officer, who took cover behind a brick pillar. His partner fired at Wheeler.

Officers eventually arrested Wheeler near Eighth Street and Euclid Avenue. Police recovered a .357 revolver nearby. Wheeler is a convicted felon, court records said.
