The extension is designed to provide support to Alden, whose contract originally ran through 2017 and is now extended through June 30, 2019, as he oversees the school’s transition to the Southeastern Conference.
“Mike has provided important leadership during a time of transition of conferences,” chancellor Brady Deaton said in a statement.
Alden is also overseeing the development of a planned $200 million upgrade to the school’s athletic facilities, which he expects to be completed in eight to 10 years. The extension, which does not increase his base salary, performance incentives or any other form of income, puts Alden in position to be in charge for the duration of that process.
“We want to see a stable pathway as we look to the future,” Deaton said in the statement. “This contract extension is one way to reinforce our commitment to excellence in athletics and to the academic mission of our university.”
Alden, who has been at Missouri since 1998, also helped guide Missouri from the Big 12 to SEC late last year. He hired current football coach Gary Pinkel, who has led Missouri to a school-record seven consecutive bowl games, and current basketball coach Frank Haith, who led Missouri to a 30-5 record and the Big 12 tournament title last season, his first at the helm.
“I want to thank Chancellor Deaton and our leadership at Mizzou for their continued confidence and support of our efforts in Tiger Athletics,” Alden said in a statement. “This extension is greatly appreciated, and I believe it reflects the efforts of so many people working together for academic integrity, social responsibility and competitive excellence. We look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead as we enter the SEC.”
Under his current contract, Alden’s base salary is $301,917, and he may earn up to a total of $777,976 through a combination of base salary and performance incentive income.
