MU releases new depth chart; Meiners out "minimum" of two weeks

The Kansas City Star

— Missouri's season opener against Southeastern Louisiana is Saturday, and the Tigers released an updated depth chart and injury updates today. Here's a quick breakdown what was revealed:

*True freshman Evan Boehm is listed as the starter at left guard. The Lee's Summit West grad had been locked in a competition with junior Max Copeland, but with the recent injury to starting right guard Jack Meiners, Copeland is now listed as the starter at right guard.

*The release says Meiners, who suffered a knee injury in MU's scrimmage on Thursday, will be out a couple weeks at the minimum.

*True freshman receiver Dorial Green-Beckham is listed as the backup to tight end Eric Waters at the "Y" position. Don't be thrown off by this too much; Green-Beckham will surely see plenty of snaps. I find it interesting that tight end Sean Culkin, who has been out for the better part of two weeks with a broken finger, is still listed third at the position behind both players. It speaks to how much the staff thinks of him; if he wasn't going to play this year, I'm sure he would have been left off the depth chart.

*True freshman Russell Hansbrough is listed third on the depth chart at tailback behind starter Kendial Lawrence and Marcus Murphy. This isn't much of a surprise; Hansbrough impressed during camp with his speed and started getting first-team reps here and there.

*Tough blow for the defense, as starting cornerback Kip Edwards is listed as doubtful in the release. Randy Ponder is on the first team at corner with E.J. Gaines, while Xavier Smith and Ernest Payton are listed as the primary backups.

*Safety Braylon Webb, another projected starter, is also listed as doubtful. Matt White slides into Webb's starting position next to Kenronte Walker.

*For now, at least, it appears Trey Barrow has the slightest of edges in the placekicking battle with Andrew Baggett. Barrow is listed first on the depth chart, but both players are also listed as "even," which is consistent with the message Missouri coach Gary Pinkel sent last Thursday, when he hinted that the battle for the job "could go down to the wire" since neither player has clearly won it.

*Kony Ealy and Michael Sam are still listed as the starters at defensive end ahead of Brad Madison. Madison is healthy now and will surely play a lot, but the fact Ealy has maintained his starting job says a lot about his growth as a player. He has the ability to be a difference maker.

I'll have more later on today. Pinkel is holding a press conference at 3:30, after which players will be available for interview. Anyway, here's the depth chart, for all to see:
