A Lee’s Summit school-to-work program has received a million-dollar bump.

The University of Central Missouri’s Missouri Innovation Campus in Lee’s Summit was one of nine school-to-work innovation campuses across the state to share in $9 million of Community Development Block Grant money that Gov. Jay Nixon gave out during a statewide tour Wednesday.

The grants will assist colleges, universities, public schools, businesses and communities on collaborations that prepare students for careers in high-demand fields while reducing the time it takes to complete a degree. By achieving a bachelor’s degree in three years or less, students can reduce their college costs.

The Missouri Innovation Campus is a joint effort involving the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District, Metropolitan Community College and Kansas City area business partners. Students enroll at the beginning of their high school junior year, aiming to complete a bachelor’s degree within four years while earning course credit from Metropolitan Community College and the University of Central Missouri.

In addition to classroom time, students participate in apprenticeships and on-the-job education with partnering corporations that include Cerner, DST and St. Luke’s Hospital.
