Street floods in River Market area after water main break

Updated: 2012-07-22T04:19:05Z

Police blocked off streets in the River Market area of Kansas City after a water main break Saturday night caused a torrent of water to pour down Walnut Street.

City crews were on their way and police blocked northbound traffic on Walnut and westbound traffic on Independence at Grand Boulevard as water seeped from seams and cracks in the street.

Nearby restaurants and bars were being closed.

The street remained intact where the break occurred, but water was rushing beneath the surface.

“You can feel it rumbling,” said Sgt. Rob Schreiber of the Kansas City Police Department. “That’s what I’m a little worried about.”
