A 38-year-old Jackson County woman was charged with child endangerment after her 5-year-old son was found walking alone this morning along a busy two-lane highway near Adams Dairy Parkway.
The child was unharmed. The incident in eastern Jackson County was reported just after 7 a.m. when a motorist alerted police after seeing the child, dressed in only a diaper, along the roadway. Authorities determined that the boy likely walked about a quarter of a mile and was picked up at Route AA and Adams Dairy Parkway. There are no sidewalks along the busy two-lane route, said Blue Springs police spokesman Detective Jeremy Dickstein.
The mother, Rhonda Walter, contacted police. She said she was asleep and did not know the child had left their home.
The case was turned over to Jackson County when it was determined that Walter lived just outside Blue Springs. Sgt. Ronda Montgomery of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department said Walter was charged with the municipal ordinance violation of child endangerment. A court date has not been set.
The child is in the custody of the Missouri Division of Family Services.
