Football is set to launch at five colleges this fall and 17 more between 2013-2015. None are in Missouri or Kansas, but several have area ties.

 

Former Chiefs defensive back and Avila coach Kevin Porter is the head coach at Point University in West Point, Ga., an NAIA independent that will open play this season. Porter spent a year at Avila and also was an assistant for Mid-America Nazarene and head coach of the Kansas City Brigade in the Arena Football League.

In 2013, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte will open as Division I independent and be coached by Brad Lambert, a Kansas State defensive back in the 1980s. Lambert, from Hoxie, Kan., had been an assistant coach at four stops, most recently defensive coordinator at Wake Forest.

Houston Baptist begins play in 2014 in the Southland Conference under head coach Vic Shealy, who was Kansas’ defensive coordinator last season.
