The 83rd All-Star Game is at Kauffman Stadium on July 10. Leading up to that game, The Star is looking back at a Midsummer Classic game every day.

This was the first All-Star Game played at night, and according to the Baseball Almanac website, American League manager Joe McCarthy was left seeing red.

McCarthy was accused of playing favorites with his Yankees players, so he didn’t start any of them in the game. And then he didn’t use any of them in the game either.

Nonetheless, a DiMaggio had a huge game. Vince DiMaggio of the Pirates made the first of his two All-Star Game appearances. With the American League ahead 5-1, DiMaggio tripled and scored in the seventh inning, then led off the ninth inning with a homer. It was all for naught as the American League was too far out in front.

Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, Bobby Doerr of the Red Sox hit a three-run homer. Detroit’s Dick Wakefield had an RBI double in the third inning and a National League error led to another run in the fifth inning.

The National League got its first run in the top of the first when the Cardinals’ Stan Musial, in the first of his 24 All-Star Game appearances, hit a sacrifice fly.

A number of All-Stars missed the game while serving in the armed forces during World War II.
