“Rock of Ages” director Adam Shankman is unabashed in describing his reaction to hearing Tom Cruise sing for the first time.

Shankman, who also directed the movie version of “Hairspray,” listened as Tom, who plays rock star Stacee Jaxx, took his first lesson with Axl Rose’s former voice coach. “He sounded amazing,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And within one lesson his range broadened as he opened up. I opened the door, and I was like a 15-year-old girl, I was screaming and jumping up and down and going, ‘This is going to work.’ ”

Child actor Max Page is doing well after open-heart surgery on Thursday. Max, 7, is the mini Darth Vader in that Volkswagen Super Bowl commercial last year. “We had to replace the pulmonary valve, which we did without incident,” surgeon Vaughn Starnes said in a statement. Max was born with a congenital heart defect and has had several surgeries.
