The National League killed the All-Star buzz quickly.

Willie Mays of the Giants opened the game with a leadoff triple against Boston’s Bill Monbouquette and scored on a single by the Pirates’ Bob Skinner. It looked as if Monbouquette would limit the damage, but the Cubs’ Ernie Banks hit a two-out, two-run homer to make it 3-0.

The next inning, Milwaukee Braves catcher Del Crandall hit a solo homer to extend the lead to 4-0.

Chuck Estrada of the Orioles came relieved in the third inning and got two quick outs before Banks doubled. Joe Adcock of the Braves singled and the Pirates’ Bill Mazeroski singled home Banks, making it 5-0.

Nellie Fox of the White Sox had a RBI single in the sixth inning to get the American League on the board. Al Kaline of the Tigers drilled a two-run homer in the eighth inning to make things interesting.

The American League put a pair of runners on board with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Vern Law shut the door.

Bud Daley of the Kansas City A’s pitched a scoreless ninth inning in what was Brooks Robinson’s first All-Star Game appearance.
