Niecie’s Restaurant has been serving up soul food for more than a quarter of a century.

The business started out on Prospect Avenue in 1985. Co-owners/husband-and-wife team Perry and Denise Ward now have two Niecie’s Restaurants, one at 6441 Troost Ave. and another at 8686 E. 63rd St.

Keeping it all in the family, Denise’s youngest sister, Paula Griffin, is a cook extraordinaire and the designated baker of the peach cobbler.

“This peach cobbler is home-style cooking at its best,” Griffin says. “The secret is in the crust, and it’s a recipe that’s been carried down from our great-grandmother, Isabelle Hunt.”

The sisters put a lot of heart into their soul food menu, which also features such comfort foods as meatloaf, pork chops and fried chicken.

“Cobbler at the end of a meal just seals the deal,” Ward says. “It’s real hot, juicy, flaky and sweet and, believe me, you get a $4 portion. Some even ask for extra crust, it’s that good.”
