The new Farm to Table Kitchen in the City Market, Fifth and Walnut streets, gives caterers, farmers and small food producers a place to process the harvest at the peak of freshness.
Food 2012: The Places
Buy a peck and pickle the peppers
March 17
The cozy two-story facility is on the north side of the market, a few doors down from Carollo’s Gourmet Deli, opening to a covered walkway on the market side, and to a loading dock through a garage door in the back.
Funded by a grant through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the commercially licensed kitchen can be rented for $15 an hour for a minimum of two hours plus a one-time $100 application fee. The kitchen is equipped with an industrial refrigerator-freezer, gas range, large-capacity mixer, ovens, three sinks, cooling racks and prep tables.
The Farm to Table Kitchen will also offer demonstrations open to the public during the Saturday farmers market to give shoppers ideas about how to cook produce sold at the market that may be unfamiliar, such as the many varieties of locally grown Asian greens and vegetables.
To rent the kitchen, you must have a business license and liability insurance. The room may also be rented as an event space for parties and celebrations.
