No Kansas state dog honor for Toto this time

Better luck next time, Toto.

A proposal to name the cairn terrier — the breed that played Toto in “The Wizard of Oz” — the official state dog has fizzled.

The House Standing Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources declined to hear the bill, effectively killing it for the current session.

State Rep. Ed Trimmer, a Winfield Democrat, who introduced the bill, said he plans to reintroduce it next year. He said he hopes more schoolchildren will become involved in the project.

Students at Liberty View Elementary School in Olathe had launched a letter-writing campaign to designate the cairn terrier the official state dog.

PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, had opposed to the measure, fearing it would add to Kansas’ puppy mill problems.
