Royals Notebook | Piña helped from field after injuring knee

More News

Royals catcher Manny Piña required assistance to leave the field Wednesday morning after suffering an injury to his right knee while catching a round of batting practice.

“There was a ball to his left,” manager Ned Yost said. “He just shifted, caught his spikes and tweaked his right knee. We’ll know more in the next day or two exactly what it is.”

Piña, 24, is battling Brayan Peña for duty as Sal Perez’s backup. Piña spent most of last season at Class AAA Omaha, where he batted .238 with five homers and 25 RBIs in 68 games. He was three for 14 in four big-league games.

The injury leaves the club with five catchers in camp for 29 pitchers.

Holland, Coleman reach deals

Right-handed relievers Greg Holland and Louis Coleman reached agreements on one-year contracts prior to Wednesday’s workout.

Holland, 25, got $497,150 after going 5-1 last season with a 1.80 ERA in 46 games. Coleman, 26, received $491,750 after going 1-4 with a 2.87 ERA in 48 games. The major-league minimum is $480,000.

The two deals leave the Royals with five unsigned players on their 40-man roster: pitchers Danny Duffy and Vin Mazzaro; catcher Sal Perez; and infielders Alcides Escobar and Johnny Giavotella.

Mijares still absent

Left-handed reliever Joœe Mijares remained a camp no-show, and club officials acknowledge growing concern at their inability to contact him. Mijares, 27, is believed to be in Venezuela, where a visa is awaiting his collection.

“You want to be able to talk to your people,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “We’re just hoping everything is OK. We’ve been in contact with this guy all winter. He’s been real accountable. So we’re hopeful everything is OK.”

The Royals signed Mijares in December to a one-year deal for $925,000 after he became a free agent when non-tendered by Minnesota. Mijares projects as the Royals’ situational lefty reliever.

Orlando has sports hernia

Outfielder Paulo Orlando was diagnosed with a sports hernia earlier this week after a routine pre-camp physical examination.

“He showed up with it,” Yost said. “He’s had it for about three weeks. He’s going to go to Philadelphia on Thursday to be re-evaluated. We’ll figure out our plan of attack from there.”

Orlando, 26, received a non-roster invite to camp after re-signing with the Royals as a minor-league free agent. He batted a combined .268 last season with a .320 on-base percentage in 103 games at Class AAA Omaha and Class AA Northwest Arkansas.

Crow targeted

It wasn’t bad enough for Missouri alum Aaron Crow to watch his Tigers suffer an upset loss Tuesday night to Kansas State. Watching the game at the other end of the couch was teammate Everett Teaford suddenly claiming purple allegiance.

“He’s sitting two feet away from me rooting for K-State,” Crow said. “That (ticked) me off even more.”

Teaford is a Georgia Southern grad but claims K-State ties through an uncle and two cousins. Crow wasn’t pacified: “My sister went to KU. That doesn’t mean I’m a KU fan.”

Speaking of which…the Tigers’ next game is Saturday…at Kansas, which has no shortage of fans among the Royals and the club’s support staff.

“Just please don’t lose on Saturday,” Crow pleaded. “I’d like to think they couldn’t have two bad games in a row.”
